Boron is a trace mineral also known as boric acid, borate or sodium borate. It is important for bone and joint health.

Why you may need boron

Osteoporosis prevention – boron is important for the development and maintenance of bones. It helps activate vitamin D and oestrogen and improves calcium metabolism and utilisation.

Osteoarthritis relief – evidence suggests that boron can help decrease the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

How much to use?

An Australian RDI has not been established.

Symptoms of deficiency

Deficiency symptoms that may arise include joint pain, bone loss, poor memory and concentration.

Food sources

The best dietary sources include prunes, avocados, almonds, peanuts, pecans, hazelnuts, apples, pears and green vegetables.

Other reasons why you may need more

An imbalance of other nutrients such as vitamin D, magnesium or methionine, can increase your demand for boron.

Deficiency of fluoride and copper toxicity.

Safety notes

We only need trace amounts of boron and toxicity can appear at low doses.

Long-term use of 1g daily can cause dermatitis, diarrhoea, lethargy, alopecia (hair loss), nausea and weight loss.
